1881

3rd Jan. 1881

Joint Meeting of the Trustees and Committee held at White Hall, Monday 3rd January 1881.

Trustees present ; The Rev. W.M. Gunson, Mr. W. Parkin, Mrs. George Moore was also present.

Committee present: Messrs. Martin, Newbold, Horn, Banks, Penn, Lattimer, Coulthard and Potter.

The Rev.d W.M. Gunson presided, after stating the object of the Trustees desiring to meet the Committee be submitted the following amendments etc.:-

There then followed a blank half-page.

Meeting held at White Hall, Monday 3rd. January 1881.

Moved by Mr. Horn seconded by Mr. Potter. "That two fenders be purchased." Carried.

Application for use of the Lecture Room.

Mr. Horn moved and Mr. Lattimer seconded.

"That the Rechabites have the use of the Lecture Room on Friday 7th of January, and that they pay a sum of one shilling." Carried.

7th Feb. 1881

Ordenary Meeting held on Monday 7th Feb. 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penrice, Lattimer, Penn, Horn, Newbold and Coulthard.

The Minutes of the last Meeting read and conformed.

Mr. Martin handed over the Ordinance Survey Maps he had got mounted.

Arrangments for Dr. Simpson’s lecture. The Sec. to request Dr. Briggs to preside, failing him, Mr. W. Norman, Hall Bank.

Mr. Horn was instructed to see M. Carrick, Wigton respecting his kind offer to give his Entertainment in aid of the Library Funds.

"Request of the Miners for use of the Lecture Room granted on the same terms as last time viz. 3/6 the charge." Carried.

Mr. Penrice at the end of the ordinary business put a post card, into the hands of the Chairman, sent by the Secretary to the Rev. R.J. Rundle informing him "that the Lecture Room was engaged on the 13th Jan. but that it could be used on either the 15th or 20th Jan. and asked for an explanation on behalf of the Rev.d R.J. Rundle. The Secretary informing the Committee that the Lecture Hall was required on the 13th January for the Lecture of the Lord Bishop of Carlisle. Mr. Penrice was therefore deputed to inform Mr. Rundle accordingly.

7th March 1881

Ordinary Meeting held March 7th 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penrice, Lattimer, Penn, Horn, Newbold and Coulthard.

Minutes of last Meeting read and conformed.

Repairs The Stairs showing signs of wear. Mr. Newbold moved and Mr. Penn seconded, that Mr. Lattimer be instructed to procure and fix suitable metal plates on the Stairs without delay, and also do repairs that may be required. Carried.

Quarterly Meeting of the Members to be held on the 21st Inst.

Resolved. That Miss Dalton be thanked for the Illuminated list of subscribers to the Hall that she has prepared.

Arrangements were completed for holding an Entertainment the proceeds to be handed over to the Custodian.

21st March 1881

Monday the 21st March. The ordinary Quarter Meeting of the Members held. Members of the Committee present; Messrs. Lattimer, Potter, Penn and Newbold.

Some dissatisfaction was expressed by two or three of the Members on the newspapers.

4th April 1881

Special Meeting of the Committee held on the 4th April 1881.

Full attendance of Members of the Committee.

Minutes of the previous Meeting read and confirmed.

Messrs. Carrick & Riggs Entertainment. Arrangements were made for holding the same. The date to be fixed by Mr. Carrick.

Use of Room. The Miners to have the use of the Lecture Room on the same terms as before. 3/6 charge.

The Custodians Concert. The Chairman handed over to the Custodian and his wife the sum of £5 the proceeds of the Concert supplemented by the committee to that amount.

Mr. Lattimer was instructed to fix hat pins in the Committee Room and Library.

11th April 1881

Meeting held on Monday April 11th 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Penn, Potter and Newbold.

Buisness:- Messrs. Carrick & Riggs Entertainment to be held on Thursday May 5th.

Resolved That Mr. Lattimer carry out the requirements in preparing the Platform etc.

2nd May 1881

Ordinary Meeting held on Monday May 2nd 1881.

Present Messrs. Messrs. Martin, Penrice, Penn, Newbold, Lattimer & Potter.

Complaint of the Custodian respecting the disturbance occasioned by the children attending the Sunday School. The Secretary was instructed to write the Superintendent of the Sunday School and give the names of the children complained of.

Filling up vacancy occasioned by Mr. Harris’s removal.

Mr. Lattimer moved and Mr. Newbold seconded.

That on the recommendation of Mr. Martin, Mr. Adam Pooley, Newlands Row be appointed in Mr. Harris’s place. Carried.

6th June 1881

Meeting held on Monday 6th June 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penn, Newbold and Lattimer.

Minutes of the last Meeting read and confirmed.

During the proceeding month Dr. Jones, Aspatria, offered to deliver a lecture, permission being obtained by Secretary from the Committee, a slight deficiency arising the Committee defrayed the same.

The Secretary paid the Rent from the Good Templars. 10/-.

Quarterly Meeting of Members fixed for Friday June 22nd.

Quarterly Meeting of Members held on Friday 22nd June.

Mr. Martin in the Chair.

A fair attendance of Members, Ordinary businesses, payment of subscriptions, and sale of Newspapers.

July & August 1881

There being no business for Ordinary Meeting in July, Committee did not meet.

No business in August, Committee did not meet.

2nd Sept. 1881

Ordinary Meeting of the Committee held Sept. 2nd

Present Messrs. Martin, Newbold, Potter, Penrice, Penn, Lattimer, Banks and Pooley.

Resolved. "That the Secretary write a letter of condolences to Mrs. Wilson on the death of Robert Coulthard, expressing regret of his death and the loss the Institute sustains thereby."

Mr. Newbold moved and Mr. Banks seconded.

"That Mr. Matthew Barnes be appointed to fill the vacancy on the Committee occasioned by the death of Robert Coulthard." Carried.

Resolved "That the Bagatelle Board be covered and that a load of firewood be procured." Carried.

Resolved "That the Good Templars be permitted the use of the Lecture Room etc. on the occasion of the forthcoming District Lodge Session.

14th September 1881

Special Meeting of the Committee held on Thursday 14th September.

Present:- Messrs. Martin, Pooley, Penrice, Penn, Banks, Potter, Barnes and Newbold.

Business:- The arrangements requested in connection with the visit of Dr. George MacDonald when through the kindness of Mrs. George Moore, he will give his representation of Bunyan’s, Pilgrims Progress.

Mr. Lattimer was instructed to carry out any alterations required in connection with the Platform etc.

The Committee pledged themselves to use every effort to make the Meeting a success.

30th Sept. 1881

General half-yearly Meeting by order of the Committee was held on Friday September 30th.

Business: Payment of Members subscription etc. Balance sheet submitted, showing receipts ect.

General half-yearly Meeting by order of the Committee was held on Friday September 30th.

Mr. Martin in the Chair.

Business: Payment of Members subscription etc. Balance Sheet submitted, showing the receipts & payments of the past half year was submitted by the Committee to the Members.

No alterations being made in the list of Newspapers to be taken in they were sold at slightly advanced prises.

The Members present paid their Subscriptions.

4th Nov. 1881

Special Meeting of the Committee held at Music Hall, on Friday 4th Nov. 1881.

The following Trustees were present by invitation, Sir Wilfred Lawson in the Chair, W. Parkin, Esq. Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penn, Penrice, Banks, Barnes, Pooley and Newbold.

Sir Wilfred being voted to the Chair. The Minutes of the last Meeting was read and confirmed.

J.H. Fordham, Esq. read and explained the Draft Deed.

Rule III was amended to read as follows:-

"That when any vacancy arises in the number of Trustees, the continuing Trustees have the power of appointing new ones."

"Mr. William Parkin was appointed Treasurer to the Trustees."

"That the Institution shall be open at such times as the Trustees and Committee shall determine from time to time."

Sir Wilfred Lawson moved and Mr. W. Parkin seconded.

"That Mrs. George Moore be appointed Trustee in the place of the Rev. W.M. Gunson"

17th Nov. 1881

Special Meeting held on Thursday 17th November 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penn, Banks, Barnes, Pooley, Newbold and Lattimer.

Resolved. That the Secretary writes a letter of condolence to Mrs. Mitchell, the wishes of the Rev. W.M. Gunson.

Resolved. That the Rev. C.H. Gem be requested to take the Chair on the 29th Inst. When Drewett O. Drewett delivers his Lecture on "The Economy of Bees."

Addmission to Lectures. Mr. Martin moved and Mr. Lattimer seconded.

"That the charge of admission be as follows:-

Front Seats 3d. Back Seats 1d. Members free." Carried.

Resolved. That Mr. Martin be requested to make arrangements with Mr. Russell, Ordinance Survey, Geological Department, to deliver a Lecture on Geology.

Repairs. Mr. Lattimer was empowered to make certain repairs necessary; also to take steps to prevent damp in West Gable.

5th Dec. 1881

Ordinary Meeting held December 5th 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penn, Newbold and Lattimer.

The Minutes of the last Meeting read and confirmed.

The Secretary read a letter from Mrs. Mitchell acknowledging the letter of condolence; also another letter from the same lady offering a donation of Books to the Library, consisting of MacMillan’s Magazine complete to October 1881. The Secretary was instructed to thank Mrs. Mitchell for her gift and to arrange for having them brought.

Resolved. "That S.P. Foster, Esq. be requested to take the Chair on the 27th Inst. when Sir Wilfred Lawson will deliver his lecture.

Resolved. That Dr. W.P. Briggs be asked to deliver a lecture in February.

 30th Dec. 1881

Ordinary Meeting of the Committee held prior to the General Halfyearly Meeting of the Members on Friday 30th Dec. 1881.

Present Messrs. Martin, Potter, Penn, Penrice, Barnes, Newbold, Lattimer and Pooley.

The Minutes of the previous Meeting read and confirmed.

The Secretary instructed to secure a Chairman for the lecture by Rev. George Richardson on Tuesday the 17th January.

The following gentleman be requested to deliver a lecture; Mr. Wm. Norman, Mr. G.J. Taylor, Agricultural School, Aspatria.

Mr. Newbold was instructed to make arrangements for an Entertainment.

Resolved. That the Large Room be allowed to the Good Templars on Monday 2nd. Jan.

Resolved. That the Large Room be allowed for Religious Meetings any Evening it may be unengaged during the next fortnight.
